Brucella Canis

Do you have (or are you thinking of getting) a dog from abroad?

Animals coming into the UK from abroad can bring infectious diseases with them, which are rarely (or sometimes never) encountered here. These obviously pose a threat to other animals, but some also pose a threat to people. One such disease in dogs which is on the rise in the UK is Brucella. It is a highly infectious disease caused by the bacterium Brucella canis.

It can cause a range of symptoms in dogs, but worryingly, many dogs do not show any signs but can still transmit the disease.
